eminary for the 15 years that I served on its faculty (1983-1997). It was with great sadness that I heard of his passing. Yet I rejoice in the assurance that he is with God for eternity.
Dr. Chang was a brilliant musician who, just as he was completing a Doctorate in Musical Arts, was compelled to accept the TBTS Presidency. He served faithfully as president until retirement, most certainly sacrificing musical opportunities.
Dr. Chang loved the Seminary students and the Baptist churches of Taiwan, and he was loved by them. He was also an outstanding ambassador to the visiting professors and other Christian “dignitaries” from overseas who visited our campus.
Faculty meetings were something to look forward to each month. Seated at the head of a conference table of about 14 fulltime faculty, Dr. Chang led us in planning and praying over the work of the Seminary.
Dr. Chang was always seated on the front row at our 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to Friday chapel worship times, showing by example his unwavering commitment to prioritizing worship.
Each time our periodic Seminary newsletter was being prepared for mailing, he was in the middle of the effort, folding and sorting, surrounded by students who were doing the same. That always stood out to me as just one small example of his servanthood.
Even with the heavy responsibilities that the TBTS presidency entailed, he remained devoted to training church musicians. In addition to his teaching, he attended every recital, concert, and post-recital reception, serving as a teacher and encourager to students and faculty. Dr. Chang had a keen sense of humor. I remember many, many times when he would join others in laughing heartily over circumstances or situations.
He and Mrs. Chang were solid spiritual leaders, every day in every circumstance. Their commitment to God and His work was unwavering.
How thankful I am for God’s faithful servant, Dr. John Chang, who led TBTS during the challenging years when the Seminary passed from International Mission Board support and leadership into the hands of capable, dedicated Taiwan Baptists.
